2 months of Global Convoy-style, overlanding adventure from Estonia to the Pamir Highway through 4 of the 7 ‘Stans’!

A (very) Rough Plan

From 17th of July to 17th of September 2022

From Tallinn, Estonia we head off to St. Petersburg, then Moscow and through the Russian countryside on our way down to the Kazakh border. We then follow along the Caspian Sea coast until it’s time to peel off to Uzbekistan. The Aral Sea, the ancient city of Khiva, etc. we’ll tick off all the best Uzbek spots before crossing into Tajikistan and heading to their capital, Dushanbe.
We’ll stock up and prep for the Pamir Highway here and then head out on Earth’s 2nd highest highway, along the Afghanistan border and then turn North to Kyrgyzstan’s gorgeous mountains and lakes and, if time, do a final dip into Kazakhstan to explore some of their national parks!

Why 2 possible start lines?

In typical convoy fashion, we picked a route that would have its fair share of obstacles… And that’s before taking into account how COVID makes movement across borders even more complicated. We’ve run many trips where at the time of planning, certain parts of the route were either unconfirmed, unknown or simply closed, and so far it hasn’t been a problem. And, being honest, alternate routes have always proved as exciting and interesting as the original plan.
As of writing, Russia is not open for tourism so we’ve planned in a back up route. We’ve driven both routes before and are excited for both!
There’s even a possible (though very unlikely) 2nd back up route via Turkmenistan if it opens up in time… Though this one is VERY unlikely 😅

More Details

  • 2 months of Global Convoy-style, overlanding adventure from Estonia to the Pamir Highway through 4 of the 7 ‘Stans’!

At the Global Convoy, we run all sorts of adventures to all sorts of gorgeous, interesting places. And this trip is no exception.

Traversing 4 of the 5 Central Asian ‘Stans’ and highlighting some of the wonders that the ancient Silk Road, whilst still squeezing in some genuine adventure and meaningful local interactions. Sounds like an outstanding adventure to us

  • Mid-July 2022 to the Mid-September 2022.

This is 2 months of classic Convoy random adventure spread roughly evenly across the entire route.

For weekly or monthly prices see the Pricing section.

Those doing the entire trip will be given priority over those only doing segments.

  • Anyone looking to learn and explore without getting caught up in tourist traps.

Whilst anyone is welcome, this is adventure-travel and the pace, comforts and restrictions reflect that.

Our job is to get people out of their comfort zones, show them what they’re truly capable of and give them a new perspective on life - all while having a shit ton of fun in unbelievable locations making a ton of new friends for life and creating enough incredible, shared experiences to last a lifetime. Unsurprisingly, this doesn’t occur whilst having breakfast brought to you in bed in a 5 star hotel.

We encourage people from all walks of life to join. We’ve had 18 year olds fresh out of school through to over 50’s. It’s slightly clichéd, but it’s more about the age of your mindset and maturity than the age of your body.

The most important thing is that you are up for a challenge. There will be good times and there will be tough times, but as long as you’re willing to be a team player and help move the group forward, you’re a perfect fit!

  • Eastern Europe to Central Asia by land. Along with all the madness which that entails!

The plan is to assemble of team of about 12-18 in 2 to 4 vehicles and set off from Eastern Europe, either from the North or the South depending on the border situation at the time. We’ll inform and discuss this plan with all participants far ahead of the actual launch date.

If Plan A: We’ll meet in Tallinn, Estonia and then make our way to St Petersburg and then Moscow before heading through the Russian countryside and to the Kazakstan border. From there we’ll get our first taste of the Stans as we head for the Caspian Sea.

If Plan B: We’ll meet in Sofia, Bulgaria and head East through Turkey, enjoying the coast and culture on offer and then make our way through Georgia, enjoying their wine region before crosing into Azerbaijan and jumping on an old Soviet boat across the sea to Kazakhstan.

Plan A & B: From Kazakhstan we’ll cross into Uzbekistan and experience the ancient culture and history of the silk road, whilst making our way down to the Tajik border. We’ll cross and head to the capital, stocking up, before hitting the Pamir Highway!
This gorgeous road takes us into Kygryzstan where we can enjoy their beautiful mountain ranges and make our way to the capital, Bishkek. If we’re making time we can pop back into Kazakhstan to explore some national parks but this time is set aside for breakdowns, unforeseen circumstances, etc.

The route is VERY subject to change.

  • So this is the bit we love…

    Vehicles 🚗
We’ll be sourcing a mix of vehicles ourselves and through our community that keep with our classic convoy style: Bad enough to create an adventure but good enough to (most likely) make it!

If you want to bring your own vehicle that’s great too!
Bringing your own vehicle will create a very different experience and so there’s some important information for us to discuss with you. Just make sure you let us know directly ASAP and we’ll see if it’s workable.

    Equipment ⛺️
We will be providing communal equipment for the group: cooking, tools, etc. and have a limited number of expedition sleeping bags and roll mats which we provide on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

Tents are organised based on group size and will be discussed and allocated closer to the time once the group has taken shape.

If you would like to bring your own equipment or need help or advice in sourcing these items, just let us know in the pre-adventure call and we’ll be happy to help. 😊

  • Discounts

The standard entry fee for this adventure is £2300.

If you put down your deposit before the 15th of March 2022, we will lower this total price to £2100

If you put down your deposit before the 15th of March 2022 and you’ve also taken part in a previous Global Convoy adventure, we will lower this price to £1900.

    Our first round of ESTIMATES.

Here at the Convoy we want you to know exactly what you’re getting into ahead of time. Our goal is not to rip you off or trick you in with fantastically low costs. So to help your planning and budgeting, here’s a whole section dedicated to all the foreseeable costs for the trip. We plan for the worst when estimating for trips, so ideally you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how little you spend.

With that in mind, we’ve drawn up a very rough overview of how much the trip will cost you.

If you decide to go and get smashed every night, only eat at restaurants and don’t budget properly, you WILL spend much more. SO in summary, these are ESTIMATED costs. You can spend more or you can spend less.

    Entry Fee: £1900 to £2300

    Food & Drink: £5-10/day

    Accommodation: £5/day avg.

    Travel Insurance: £80

    Russian Visa: ~£120

    Tajik GBAO Permit ~£40

Optional Extras: (tourist sites, etc.) £50+

    Unforeseen circumstances: £100+

This is our first round of estimated costs - we’re still in talks with sponsors/accommodation/tourist boards to get the absolute maximum experience possible for these costs.

Things are subject to change but this is a good indicator of roughly what the trip will cost.

Don’t want to join for the entire journey?

The entry fee is £350/week or £1200/Month

The trip is built around people joining us from start to finish as this helps us with planning, discounts and generating the best overall experience. If you want to join for a specific set of dates rather than the full adventure please get in contact with us ASAP and we’ll do our best to make things work. Be aware, we cannot guarantee that your dates will fit with the overall plan.

  • Group discounts, local knowledge and turning up in places that people don’t usually get to.

We’ve crammed the most adventure that we possibly could into each country we’re visiting and found a bunch of awesome locations to check out and explore throughout each of them! We’ve driven these areas before and done the research to keep costs down without actually sacrificing the experience of being there.

  • Better than usual groups, stranger than usual routes and once-in-a-lifetime experiences… People seem to like them.

We start with outlandish, exciting adventure concepts and then craft them into realistically achievable plans. We then figure a minimum amount of people required to run the adventure affordably for everyone, then start taking deposits.

If we reach the minimum required participants for a given adventure, the deposits are locked in and the trip is confirmed!

If there aren’t enough confirmed team members by the cut-off date, all deposits are returned immediately.

  • Of course! That’s how we’ve made it this far! 😅

With multiple countries to travel through, each with their own restrictions - and those restrictions often changing - we’ve had to figure a fair few back up options.

Whilst this might sound like a bad thing, it’s kind of the bread and butter of Convoy trips! All we can recommend for you is to ‘hope for the best but prepare for the worst’ and we’ll do everything within our power to get you safely from a to b with a metric fuck-ton of awesome stories by the end!

  • By following local laws, guidelines and ensuring that everyone on our crew is fully vaccinated.

We want to be able to take everyone but due to the global pandemic and the nature of the trip it is unlikely that we will be able to accommodate unvaccinated guests. this is because:

For liability we can not risk someone getting sick on our trip as it puts at risk the trip itself, the environments we’re travelling through and the health of other group members.

The trip will last around 60 days, and we aim to go through multiple countries. That means that if a day is allocated to taking a PCR and waiting for results for each border we will lose a significant number of days for this. Not to mention the added cost of taking the PCRs.

If you are not vaccinated it is possible you may have to quarantine between countries, which logistically won't work with a trip like this.

Due to the nature of our trips, like any fast paced adventure, the added delays and risks for taking a guest who is not vaccinated is too much for us and our group both financially and in terms of time.

Whilst things are beginning to re-open, we are travelling at a time when travel is not so easy so we want to make sure to be responsible during this re-opening period for many countries.

While this information may change as new details emerge, this is our current situation.

  • So you may have noticed the convoy runs a bit differently to your typical tour company 😂

We want the best adventure for everyone, that’s why we personally take part in every adventure ourselves and take the time to confirm each member of the team is joining the right trip for them.

When you’ve decided this is the right adventure for you, fill out the sign up form at the bottom of the page, you’ll then be able to reserve your spot with a £100 non-refundable deposit.

We’ll then arrange a casual chat with with you to a) get to know you a little better, b) confirm that this is the right adventure for you and that you’ll gain something from it!
If we feel that actually this isn’t the right choice for you, we’ll let you know and fully refund your deposit (minus any processing fees incurred).
Don’t worry! This doesn’t mean you can’t join future Global Convoy adventures, we just don’t think this specific trip suits you based on the information we’ve been given.

You’ll then have until June 1st to pay the remaining balance and we’ll be ready to assist you with any questions or advice you need help with.

If for any reason the trip is cancelled, you will be refunded your deposit (minus any processing fees incurred).
If for any reason you are unable or choose not take part in the trip and the trip goes ahead, you will not be refunded.

If you’re still not 100% clear, click here for a badly drawn diagram Max made that should help 😊

  • If anything isn’t 100% clear then please get in contact with us and we’ll be happy to clear things up.

You can send us a message here or reach out to us on social media further down this page. 😊

WARNING:
This is a real adventure. Things can go wrong, times can be tough and as with any overlanding journey there is the possibility of being injured or worse.
These risks and the rewards that come with them are what make such unorthodox adventures so fantastic, but do not mistake it for an all-inclusive package holiday.

COVID:
Everything written above is dependant on the route remaining open and the situation at the time.
We have several backup plans in case of disruptions but if the trip is unable to go ahead, refunds will be given (minus any processing fees).
